Romans 10:17 - Growing Faith

Faith cometh by hearing,
and hearing by the word of God.
Rom 10:17 (KJV)

Faith comes from hearing the message of the gospel [Disciple SB]

Faith is stimulated by a hearing of the Good News, the Word of God. [Victor
Teacher's Commentary]

Faith will grow by the study of the Word [The Bible Notebook]

"Hearing," which in biblical thought implies responding appropriately,
requires first a message, but then requires understanding and acceptance by
those to whom the message is given. [Victor Bible Reader's Companion]

The beginning, progress, and strength of faith, are by hearing. The word of
God is therefore called the word of faith: it begets and nourishes faith.
God gives faith, but it is by the word as the instrument. Hearing (that
hearing which works faith) is by the word of God. It is not hearing the
enticing words of man's wisdom, but hearing the word of God, that will
befriend faith, and hearing it as the word of God (Matthew Henry's
Commentary)

This verse is an important statement of the nature and source of true faith.
Genuine faith is not a blind confidence to be exercised in the absence of
adequate evidence. Faith is our conviction about things that we cannot see
(Heb. 11:1), and this conviction must be founded upon knowledge, a knowledge
based upon the Word of God, the message about Christ. As a means of
developing a transforming and enduring faith, there is no substitute for the
regular and earnest study of the Bible. [SDA Commentary]

According to Jam.2:20,26, having faith is critical to getting things
accomplished. Now, none of us probably needs to move mountains, but all of
us need the kind of faith that could! And to pray without faith is
pointless. So where do we get the mountain-moving faith that we need to be
effective prayers? Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes by hearing, and
hearing by the Word of God. As we read the Word and bring it to bear upon
our lives, we will grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, which
is faith-producing. Then as we seek His will, in His way, in His time,
which is all that we will want, our prayers will be answered - even to the
moving of something as great as a mountain! [In His Time; Walk With Wisdom]
