Proverbs 22:17-19 - Assimilating Scripture has Rich Consequences!

Prov. 22:17b-19a (NRSV) Incline your ear and hear my words, and
apply your mind to my teaching; for it will be pleasant if you keep
them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips. So that your
trust may be in the LORD,

These are to be heard with humility and deep attention: "Bow
down thine ear."....
They must not only be heard, but meditated and pondered: "Apply
thine heart to my knowledge." (Adam Clarke Commentary)

Memorize the sayings...
Be able to quote and talk about them [Bible Knowledge Commentary]

Trust in God is the ultimate design of the instruction.
[Jamieson, Fausset, And Brown Commentary]

They encourage people to trust... in the Lord. [Bible Knowledge
Commentary]

These proverbs are written that we may put our trust in the Lord
rather than in man. [SDA Commentary]

To these words, to this knowledge, the ear must be bowed down,
and the heart applied by faith and love. To live a life of delight
in God and dependence on him, is the foundation of all practical
religion. [Matthew Henry Commentary]

Indifference, self-sufficiency, or dullness of mind and heart
can close our ears to words of wisdom. We do not acquire knowledge
by sitting passively and waiting for it. We must search for it as
though it were a hidden treasure. [Disciple SB]

What is "pleasant" in the sight of God and man is the union of
two things, belief passing into profession, profession resting on
belief. (Barnes' Notes)

Proverbs are valuable to us only if we listen carefully, take
them to heart, and pass them on as well as practice them. [The
365-Day Devotional Commentary]

Other Bible passages that convey the idea that we should
incorporate God's word, the Bible, into our lives:

Deut. 6:6 (KJV) And these words, which I command thee this day,
shall be in thine heart:
Deut. 6:7 (KJV) And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy
children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and
when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou
risest up.
Deut. 6:8 (KJV) And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine
hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
Deut. 6:9 (KJV) And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy
house, and on thy gates.

John 6:51 (KJV) I am the living bread which came down from
heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the
bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of
the world.

As we incorporate the Bible into our lives it will not only help
us to trust in God but bring about miracles in us:

It will lead us to salvation which is in Christ:
2 Tim. 3:15 (KJV) And that from a child thou hast known the holy
scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith
which is in Christ Jesus.

It will cause our faith to grow:
Rom. 10:17 (KJV) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by
the word of God.

It will show us right from wrong:
2 Tim. 3:16 (KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness:

It will keep us from sinning:
Psa. 119:11 (KJV) Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I
might not sin against thee.
1 John 2:1 (KJV) My little children, these things write I unto
you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with
the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

It will sanctify us:
John 17:17 (KJV) Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is
truth.

It will build us up:
Acts 20:32 (KJV) And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to
the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give
you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

It will restore the divine image in us that sin has badly damaged:
2 Pet. 1:4 (KJV) Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and
precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine
nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
