Psalm 23:3 - One Of The Crown Jewels Of Scripture - verse 3.

Psa. 23: One Of The Crown Jewels Of Scripture - verse 3.

Psa 23:3 (KJV) He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths
of righteousness for his name's sake.

Psa 23:3 (CWR) He restores the strength of my soul. He guides
me along paths of righteousness.

Psa 23:3 (TLB) He gives me new strength. He helps me do what
honors him the most.

Restores. Through the provision of food and water (v. 2). [Ryrie
SB]

How does God restore our souls? (23:3) David paints a picture of
sheep being nourished with food and water. In the same way, God
nounshes us spiritually and emotionally. His loving care puts our minds
at ease so we can rest peacefully. To be restored means to be
refreshed and strengthened. [Quest SB]

He restores my soul: God refreshes His people with His quiet
voice and gentle touch. [Nelson SB]

He restores my soul: He brings back its vigor. He encourages it;
excites it to new effort; fills it with new joy. (Barnes' Notes)

Restores my soul: Revives me, refreshes my spirit. [NIV SB]

A second blessing that comes from the Lord's leading is
spiritual restoration. As a shepherd leads his sheep to placid waters for
rest and cleansing, so the Lord restores or refreshes the soul. Here
the spiritual lesson is clear: the Lord provides forgiveness and
peace for those who follow Him. [Bible Knowledge Commentary]

He restores my soul: Brings back my life from destruction, and
converts my soul from sin, that it may not eternally perish. (Adam Clarke
Commentary)

In the consciousness of sins forgiven there is inexpressible
peace and joy and rest. MH267-8

He restores my soul: reviving me when fainting , and
overcome temporarily by temptations. (Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown
Commentary)

Guides me in paths of righteousness: paths that offer safety and
well-being,... It is also possible that "paths of righteousness" refers to the
paths that conform to God's moral will. [NIV SB]

Paths of righteousness. God always leads us in the right way,
although at the time that way may not seem easy. [SDA Commentary]

The third blessing that comes from the Lord's leading is
guidance in the right way (paths of righteousness). A good shepherd knows
the right paths on which to bring the sheep home safely. [Bible
Knowledge Commentary]

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness, in the way of my
duty; in that he instructs me by his word and directs me by conscience
and providence. (Matthew Henry's Commentary)

How does God guide us? (23:3) God does not reveal every detail
of his plan for our lives. Nevertheless, there is an inner
assurance that comes when we do his will. Developing a close, dependent
relationship with the Lord will help us follow his way. And if we do the
things we know God wants us to do, we'll discover more details about
his will for us. [Quest SB]

Those only are led by the still waters of comfort that walk in
the paths of righteousness. The way of duty is the truly pleasant
way. It is the work of righteousness that is peace. In these paths we
cannot walk unless God both lead us into them and lead us in them.
(Matthew Henry's Commentary)

Sheep are completely dependent on the shepherd for provision,
guidance, and protection. The New Testament calls Jesus the good shepherd
(John 10:11); the great Shepherd (Hebrews 13:20); and the Chief
Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4). As the Lord is the good shepherd, so we are his
sheep--not frightened, passive animals, but obedient followers, wise enough
to follow one who will lead us in the right places and in right
ways. [Life Application SB]

When we allow God our shepherd to guide us, we have contentment.
When we choose to sin, however, we go our own way and cannot blame
God for the environment we create for ourselves. Our shepherd knows
the "green pastures" and "quiet waters" that will restore us. We
will reach these places only by following him obediently. Rebelling
against the shepherd's leading is actually rebelling against our own
best interests. We must remember this the next time we are tempted to
go our own way rather than the shepherd's way. [Life Application
SB]

No creature will lose itself sooner than a sheep, so apt is it
to go astray, and then so unapt to find the way back. The best
saints are sensible of their proneness to go astray like lost sheep
(Matthew Henry's Commentary)

God's leading is always in paths that are right in His eyes and
that will honor His name. [Ryrie SB]

For His name's sake: brings honor to the Lord's name. [NIV SB]

For His name's sake: The loving actions of the Shepherd proceed
from His nature. [Nelson SB]

For his name's sake--God acts in a manner consistent with his
character. [Jamieson, Fausset, And Brown Commentary]

For his name's sake. God's guidance is a revelation to men of
His character. [SDA Commentary]

For His name's sake: that He may be honored:.... The feeling
expressed in this verse is that of confidence in God; an assurance that he
would always lead his people in the path in which they should go.
Compare . This he will always do if people will follow the
directions of His word, the teachings of His Spirit, and the guidance of
His providence. No one who submits to Him in this way will ever go
astray! (Barnes' Notes)

Enable ____________ to lie down and rest in green meadows and
lead him/her beside the quiet streams. Restore his/her failing
health. [Pocket Prayers by Robert Savage]
