Psalm 138:2b - The Name and Word of God.

Psalm 138:2b (NKJV) You have magnified Your word above all Your 
name. 

Psalm 138:2b (NASB) You have magnified Your word according to 
all Your name. 

Psalm 138:2b (NIV) you have exalted above all things your name 
and your word. 

Psalm 138:2b (ESV) you have exalted above all things your name 
and your word.  

Psalm 138:2b (NCV) You have made your name and your word greater 
than anything. 

Psalm 138:2b (NLT) your promises are backed by all the honor of 
your name. 

Psalm 138:2b (AMP) You have exalted above all else Your name and 
Your word and You have magnified Your word above all Your name!  

Psalm 138:2b (CWR) Your word and your name are exalted above 
everything. 

Psalm 138:2b (TMWB) Most holy is your name, most holy is your 
Word. 

The Septuagint renders the clause, "for thou hast magnified thy 
holy name above every thing." This reading avoids the obvious 
difficulty of considering God's word above God's name, inasmuch as "name" 
often stands for "person" or "character" (see on Ps. 7:17). [SDA Bible

The name of the Lord is the manifestation of his character (see 
notes on Ex 3:14-15; 34:6-7). It has no separate existence apart from 
the Lord, but is synonymous with the Lord himself in his gracious 
manifestation and accessibility to his people. [NIV SB 2008 re Psa.5:11] 

The word name here would refer properly to all that God had done 
to make himself known--since it is by the name that we designate or 
distinguish anyone; and, thus understood, the meaning would be, that the 
word of God--the revelation which he has made of himself and of his 
gracious purposes to mankind--is superior in clearness, and in importance, 
to all the other manifestations which he has made of himself; all 
that can be known of him in his works. Beyond all question there are 
higher and clearer manifestations of himself, of his being, of his 
perfection, of his purposes, in the volume of revelation, than any which his 
works have disclosed or can disclose. [Barnes' Notes 1800's] 

It is impossible to place the inspired, inerrant Word of God on 
too high a pedestal, for God Himself honors it above His name! The 
Word is not greater than God, for He wrote it by His Spirit, but it 
is greater than His "Name," which represents Him, and all that He 
is and does. His Word, however, represents Him more fully than His 
name alone can do: in His Word, in fact, His name is revealed.

God has made himself known to us in many ways in creation and 
providence, but most clearly by his word. The judgments of his mouth are 
magnified even above those of his hand, and greater things are done by 
them. The wonders of grace exceed the wonders of nature; and what is 
discovered of God by revelation is much greater than what is discovered by 
reason. In what God had done for David his faithfulness to his work 
appeared more illustriously, and redounded more to his glory, than any 
other of his attributes. Some good interpreters understand it of 
Christ, the essential Word, and of his gospel, which are magnified above 
all the discoveries God had before made of himself to the fathers. 
He that magnified the law, and made that honourable, magnifies the 
gospel much more. [Matthew Henry Commentary] 

Nature reveals God (see Romans 1:20) so that man can say, "The 
heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his 
handiwork," but it is in the Scriptures--His Word--that the true character 
("name") of God is revealed. These reveal the Lord Jesus Christ, who is 
the Word (John 1:1). In Him God's glory is seen in all its fullness 
(Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:3). [New Pilgrim SB]
