COMMENTARY PEARLS

Today's Scripture reads, "Take delight in the LORD, and he
will give you the desires of your heart. Sometimes we see the
first half of this verse as a means of obtaining something. Take
delight in God, and you will get. Get what? Well, maybe a husband, a
wife, a child, a job, or a new apartment. The truth is, when we take
delight in the Lord, He becomes the desire - the only desire - of our
heart. The Christian who truly takes pleasure in God doesn't love Him
out of compulsion. He doesn't feel fettered by his faith, driven to
duty, or marched at gunpoint into right living. He doesn't think, How
near can I get to wrongdoing without becoming entrapped? How close
can I dance to the edge of the cliff without falling over? No, when
we love God with all our heart, every obedience is a pleasure. And
pleasing Him makes us ten times happier than pleasing ourselves.
Lord Jesus, I have seen this so often in my life - how You
begin to replace my wants and desires with Your own. It isn't always
easy to let go of my longings, as You know so very well. But what You
leave in their place is so much better. You replace cheap, sparkly
trinkets with pure gold. [A Spectacle of Glory by Joni Eareckson Tada and
Larry Libby]

This verse sounds too good to be true. The Lord will give us
whatever we want?
But God is not a heavenly Santa Claus who always delivers
everything on our wish list. Neither is He an indulgent grandparent who
loves to spoil the grandkids by giving us all we want. Nor is God a
weak parent who, annoyed by whining and tears, gives in to our wishes
to keep the peace.
So what does this verse mean? God will give you the desires
of your heart, but the prerequisite is setting your heart to
delight in His ways. Are you able to do that, to rejoice in the things
that give God joy? Is your heart broken by the agonies in the world,
by the very things that break God's heart? Is regular time with
your Lord nourishment for your soul? Do you love being in His
presence in times of worship, both corporate and private?
As you delight yourself in the Lord in these and other ways,
God adjusts your heart to be in tune with His. Then the longings
that grow in your heart - the seeds of which are sown during your
time with your Father - will be His desires for you. And of course He
will satisfy that godly hunger. For God is always pleased to
accomplish His will in your life. [Being Still With God Every Day by Henry
Blackaby]
