Jeremiah 6:16: When You Are At The Crossroads.

Jeremiah 6:16 (NIV) This is what the LORD says: Stand at the 
crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, 
and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, 
We will not walk in it. 

Jeremiah 6:16 (NLT) This is what the LORD says: Stop at the 
crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. 
Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply, 
No, thats not the road we want! 

Jeremiah 6:16 (AMP) Thus says the Lord: Stand by the roads and 
look; and ask for the eternal paths, where the good, old way is; then 
walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, We 
will not walk in it!  

Jeremiah 6:16 (VOICE) Eternal One (to the people): Stand at the 
crossing, and consider the ancient path, for it is good and it leads to 
Me. Walk on this path, and you will find rest for your souls. But 
they have said, We will not walk upon this road. 

WORD STUDY

Stand ye in the ways. The metaphor is that of a traveler who, 
having lost his way, stations himself at the juncture of several 
different roads, carefully considering and diligently inquiring after the

Ancient Paths. Represent the ways laid down in Gods Law. 
These are good ways, for when a person walks in them he or she will 
find rest for your souls. [The 365-Day Devotional Commentary] 

Rest for your souls. He who walks in the path that God directs 
will find peace and quietude. [SDA Bible Commentary] 

COMMENTARY

Ask for the old paths; the way of godliness and righteousness 
has always been the way God has owned and blessed. Ask for the old 
paths set forth by the written word of God. When you have found the 
good way, go on in it, you will find abundant recompence at your 
journey's end. [Matthew Henry Commentary] 

The right path for living is ancient and has been marked out by 
God. But the people refused to take God's path, going their own way 
instead. We face the same decision today, going God's old but true way, 
or following a new path of our own choosing. Don't be misled. The 
only way to find peace and "rest for your souls" is to walk on God's 
path. [Life Application SB] 

   You have chosen to follow Jesus. You have chosen an "old, 
godly way" by which to live your life. Sound old-fashioned? Many 
people would think so. "How stupid to base your life on a dusty old 
book!" some might say. Many people today think if something isn't new 
it can't be worth much.  
   Following Jesus on this "old, godly way" is the only way to 
heaven. Jesus called himself "the way" (John 14:6, May 24) and said no 
one gets to the Father except through him. The way doesn't change 
with time; it isn't different for us than it was for the ancient 
believers. The way doesn't change with the latest research or the newest 
thoughts of today's scholarly minds. It doesn't change because some 
author or some movie script tries to make it different. The old way is 
the way that has worked for centuries bringing life, peace, and joy 
to all who walked the path.  
   You're new on the path, but look at how well trod it is. 
Consider in whose footsteps you're following. Consider the many who will 
come behind you. Keep to that old, godly way"for it is the only way 
to Jesus. [The One Year Bible for New Believers re Jer.6:16] 

CLOSING THOUGHT

Jesus says Come unto Me and I will give you rest, i.e., 
Christ-consciousness will take the place of self-consciousness.... It is never 
Gods will that we should be anything less than absolutely complete in 
Him. Anything that disturbs rest in Him must be cured at once, and it 
is not cured by being ignored, but by coming to Jesus Christ. If we 
come to Him and ask Him to produce Christ-consciousness, He will 
always do it until we learn to abide in Him. [My Utmost for His Highest
