Colossians 3:16 (NKJV) Let the word of
Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching
and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your
hearts to the Lord.
COMMENTARY PEARL
Bible Memorization
The Bible is a gift that offers you so
much. But like a box full of treasure, it does you
no good unless you have the keys to unlock it.
One of the keys to unlocking the Bible is
Scripture memorization
Its a habit that will assist you in
overcoming temptation. Psalm 119:11 says, I have
hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin
against you (NIV). Memorizing the Bible helps you
to resist temptation.
John 15:7 says that having Gods Word
in your heart also leads to answered prayers.
It says, If you abide in me, and my words
abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will
be done for you (ESV).
Memorizing Scripture also helps you have
victory over worry, keeps you encouraged, and
develops your prayer life. Having Gods Word
memorized makes it easier to counsel and share the
Good News of Jesus with other people because you
have Bible verses always at the ready.
Ive heard all the excuses for not
memorizing Scripture. People say, I just cant
memorize.
The truth is that you remember whats
important to you and the things that you use. So the
questions are: Do you value Gods Word enough to
commit some verses to memory? Do you read Gods
Word often enough that you start to remember it?
Think of all the times during the day
that you pick up your smartphone - maybe as
youre waiting in the carpool line, on your lunch
break, or sitting on your couch in the evening.
What if you spent those times memorizing
Scripture instead? In your lifetime, youd probably
memorize several books of the Bible that way.
If youre new to Scripture memory,
start with just one verse a week. Write the verse
on a piece of paper or in a note on your phone.
Pull it out and look at it several times a day.
And when youre ready to move on to the next
verse, keep reviewing the ones youve already
memorized.
Its important to get a partner - maybe
a friend, coworker, spouse, or child. Say your
verses to each other and encourage each other to
keep up the habit.
As you memorize the Bible, youll find
yourself changing for the better: Remember what
Christ taught, and let his words enrich your lives
and make you wise (Colossians 3:16 TLB).

The Real Thing
You must spend a lot of time handling
counterfeit money to know what it looks like, said
Ruth Bell Graham to a man from Scotland Yard, who
was in charge of identifying counterfeit money.
No, he replied. We never touch
the stuff. All day long we just handle the real
thing: genuine currency. And when a counterfeit
bill comes our way - we can quickly detect
it.
As a Christian, you could go nuts trying
to keep up with the latest heresies and
counterfeit teachings people spread in this world. But
if you familiarize yourself with the Word of
God and become conversant with it, you will
immediately know counterfeit teachings. You will hear
someone say something and think, This isnt right.
You will know what Gods Word truly says and
what it doesnt say, because God will give you
spiritual discernment.
Spend time today studying the real thing.
If ever there was a time we need spiritual
discernment, the time is now. In the words of the apostle
Paul, Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one
another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord

Fully Committed
Most of us have interests and potential
projects that flicker across the screen of our
imagination from time to time. I wonder if I should
learn Spanish. I could probably be a mentor to a
troubled teen. But we rarely get engaged in anything
unless our heart is truly in it. When my heart is
in something, I give it my full energy and
affection. I can't wait to be involved in it. Today's
Scripture reads, "Let the message of Christ dwell
among you richly.
To follow Jesus closely, your heart must
be full of Him. You can't get closer to the
Person of Christ unless He has your heart. It's not
enough to entertain thoughts of Jesus; He must grip
your affections. It's not enough to meditate on
Him; you must feel something for Him. That's what
it means to love the Lord with all your heart,
soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). And notice
this - the heart comes first.
Dear Jesus, I hold You in my mind today
because I have read Your Word and considered who You
are to me. Now may those good and true thoughts
of You flow into my deepest affections. There
is so much more room in my heart to love You
and adore You. Fill me, please, with the love I
