John 8:44 - Insights on Truth and Error.

John 8:44 (NKJV) You are of your father the 
devil, and the desires of your father you want to 
do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and 
does not stand in the truth, because there is no 
truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from 
his own resources, for he is a liar and the 
father of it. 

The Father of Lies
   Before I was a Christian, I dont know 
that I actually thought of temptation as 
temptation. I probably thought of it more like an 
opportunity. If something looked fun, I thought, Why 
not go for it? I would give this or that 
thing a try. 
   So, when I became a Christian, other 
believers warned me, Greg, watch out!  The devil is 
going to tempt you.  
   The devil? What do you mean, the 
devil? 
   Satan is going to tempt you, they 
said. 
   But how will I know when Im being 
tempted? 
   Youll know.
   I was in high school at the time, and 
there was a very pretty girl in one of my classes. 
I noticed her, but she had never noticed me. 
She sat toward the front of the class, and one 
day after class, she came walking up to me. 
   Hi, she said. Whats your 
name? 
   I was so stunned that I momentarily 
forgot my name. She was standing there talking to 
me, and I had no idea why. 
   You know, youre cute, she went 
on to say. And you know what? My parents are 
gone for the weekend. Would you like to come and 
stay at my house? 
   And suddenly I realized what was 
happening. There it was, a temptation from the devil 
that the other Christians had warned me about. 
How did I know? Because stuff like that never 
happened to me. Trust me. It just didnt. 
   So, I told her no, even though it 
wasnt that easy to do. 
   I learned something that day: Temptation 
comes in attractive packages. Satan makes bad 
things look good. He makes wicked things look 
appealing and makes deadly things look like theyll 
be the best experience youve ever had. 
   Hes a liar. And hell do whatever he

Dealing With Fear
   Until recently, fear had been the 
Achilles' heel the enemy used to hinder me. In my 
spiritual battle against fear, one acronym is a handy 
weapon: False Evidence Appearing Real (FEAR). 
   A subtle foe, fear sometimes shows up as 
rational caution, common sense, or legitimate 
concern. Apart from truly legitimate fears, like 
fleeing a burning house or filling off a cliff, many 
of our fears are hidden in half-truths or 
unknowns. But if you give fear an inch, itll take a 
yard or more. 
   I've noticed a common thread when fear 
crops up: some smidgen of fact - a phone call, 
letter, doctor's report, or some other seemingly 
concrete evidence - will promptly lead to a sense of 
foreboding. I used to give myself over to dread and 
worry, assuming the worst. But I've discovered that 
almost always the reality is more benign. Sometimes 
nothing at all happens, and my fretting was 
fruitless. 
   Now whatever pops up, whether "good" or 
"bad," I pause, praise, and pray. I attend to 
whatever it is without projecting or jumping to 
conclusions, knowing Jesus goes with me wherever I go. I 
admit it sometimes feels risky to not immediately 
brace for the worst, but the peace I've gained
