Isaiah 60:1 - ARISE AND SHINE!

Isaiah 60:1 (NKJV) Arise, shine; For your
light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen
upon you.

Isaiah 60:1 (AMP) ARISE [from the depression
and prostration in which circumstances have kept
you - rise to a new life]! Shine (be radiant
with the glory of the Lord), for your light has
come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon
you!

WORD STUDY

Arise, shine. Isaiah here proceeds to
describe a glorious work to be accomplished by
Israel, on the assumption that a reformation, in
harmony with ch. 58:6"14, has taken place.
Chapters 60"62 describe this great work. Such was
the divine plan for ancient Israel. But as a
nation they failed in the work of reformation
within, and God was unable, therefore, to deliver
them from their enemies without or to make them
His agents in bringing salvation to the Gentiles
(see pp. 26"30). Accordingly, the covenant
privileges and responsibilities were transferred to
spiritual Israel. Hence, the bright picture of the
glorious triumph of the gospel outlined in chs.
60"62 clearly belongs to Gods people today (see
pp. 35, 36). [SDA Bible Commentary]

Light. Light was ever a symbol of the divine
presence (DA 464; see on Gen. 3:24). Christ came to
earth as the light of life (John 1:4, 5; 3:19;
8:12; 9:5; 12:35, 36, 46; see on Isa. 9:2). Those
who received Him and believed on His name (John
1:9, 12) were, in turn, to let their light shine
forth in glory to God (see on Matt. 5:14"16; 1
Peter 2:9). Before the return of Christ the gospel
message is to be proclaimed with such power that the
whole earth will be ablaze with the light of truth
(Rev. 18:1). [SDA Bible Commentary]

Darkness. Darkness is a symbol of Gods
absence; light is the symbol of Gods presence.

COMMENTARY PEARL

   Today's Scripture reads, "Arise, shine,
for your light has come, and the glory of the
Lord rises upon you." These words have a special
application for those who belong to Jesus. He has come
into our lives, and He is our light and our
glory. No matter how dark or perplexing our
circumstances are, our lives are wrapped in the light and
favor of God's mighty Son.
For some of us who are older or struggle
with disabilities, it can be hard to get moving
in the morning. Yes, we rise. But do we shine?
We may be grateful for a newday, but we may not
be grateful for the stiff joints and pain. But
here's the truth: Whatever your situation today,
the glory of the Lord is upon you, whether you
feel it or not. His glory rises upon you with
each new day. Repeat this verse out loud every
morning: Arise! Shine!
Lord Jesus, my light truly has come, and
You are that radiant, beautiful light. I invite
You to illuminate my conversations, my thoughts,
my actions, and even the expression on my face.
Your mercies toward me today are brand-new, and I
receive them with open arms and a thankful heart. [A

COMMENTARY

The words of Christ through the gospel
prophet, which are but re-echoed in the Sermon on the
Mount, are for us in this last generation:
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory
of the Lord is risen upon thee. Isaiah 60:1.
If upon your spirit the glory of the Lord is
risen, if you have beheld His beauty who is the
chiefest among ten thousand and the One
altogether lovely, if your soul has become radiant
in the presence of His glory, to you is this
word from the Master sent. TMB43, 44

The religion of Christ means more than
the forgiveness of sin; it means taking away our
sins, and filling the vacuum with the graces of
the Holy Spirit. It means divine illumination,
rejoicing in God. It means a heart emptied of self,
and blessed with the abiding presence of Christ.
When Christ reigns in the soul, there is purity,
freedom from sin. The glory, the fullness, the
completeness of the gospel plan is fulfilled in the life.
The acceptance of the Saviour brings a glow of
perfect peace, perfect love, perfect assurance. The
beauty and fragrance of the character of Christ
revealed in the life testifies that God has indeed
sent His Son into the world to be its Saviour.
Christ does not bid His followers strive
to shine. He says, Let your light shine. If you
have received the grace of God, the light is in
you. Remove the obstructions, and the Lords
glory will be revealed. The light will shine forth
to penetrate and dispel the darkness. You
cannot help shining within the range of your
influence.
The revelation of His own glory in the
form of humanity will bring heaven so near to men
that the beauty adorning the inner temple will be
seen in every soul in whom the Saviour dwells.
Men will be captivated by the glory of an
abiding Christ. And in currents of praise and
thanksgiving from the many souls thus won to God, glory
will flow back to the great Giver. COL419-421
