Psalm 139:1-6 - Only God Is Omniscient.
Psalm 139:1-6 (CWR) O Lord, you have
searched my heart and know me inside and out. 2 You
know when I sit down and when I rise; you discern
my thoughts before I think them. 3 You walk
beside me all day long, and when I lie down at
night, you're there. You know everything I do and
say. 4 There's not a word that comes from my
mouth, O Lord, that you don't know beforehand. 5
You are behind me, in front of me and all around
me wherever I go. You have touched me and drawn
me close to you. 6 I can't comprehend such
knowledge. It's so wonderful that no matter how hard I
try to understand, I can't grasp it all.
COMMENTARY PEARL
Ken Jennings is smart. The computer
software engineer from Salt Lake City, Utah, has won
more money on game shows than anybody in the
history of TV. He started his winning on the quiz
show Jeopardy! From June 2 through November 30,
2004, Ken won seventy-five straight games and
earned $2,522,700! But Ken wasn't done yet. He won
an additional $500,000 in a Jeopardy tournament
of champions. Then he appeared on Are You
Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and took home another
$500,000. He became so popular that other game shows
invited him to appear. Eventually his total winnings
grew to $3,3,414.29.
Part of that money came from the
Jeopardy! IBM Challenge in February 2011 where Ken and
Brad Rutter (who has won nearly $3.5 million on
game shows) played against "Watson," a computer
programmed to understand common language. Watson had an
advantage in that it held four terabytes of
information--that's the same as 4,000 gigabytes or about as much
as twenty normal computers. All the text from
Wikipedia was stored on its hard drive. In the end,
Ken and Brad were no match for Watson. The
computer won the two-round tournament with more than
$,000. Ken placed second with $24,000 (he could've
had much more, but played it safe on the Final
Jeopardy question), while Brad came in third.
Ken Jennings has an amazing mind.
Watson's knowledge is even more impressive. But
neither comes close to the mind of God. Simply put,
he knows everything (1 John 3:20). He's known
everything from the beginning of time, and he even
knows the future.
As you discover more about God, you'll
learn that he's omniscient, omnipotent, and
omnipresent. Those are just big words that mean God is
all-knowing, all-powerful, and present everywhere at the
same time. God's Word tells us that his knowledge
is limitless. Nothing can be hidden from him.
He searches our hearts and knows our thoughts.
Jesus knew Judas would betray him. Jesus also knew
that he'd rise from the dead. God has all the
answers to our questions and all the wisdom of the
universe.
If you knew about a website with all the
answers to life's questions on it, what would you
do? You'd probably search it out. Well, God is
that website. And you don't even need to Google
him. His knowledge is absolute. As you grow,
you'll probably become smarter than a fifth grader,
but you'll never be smarter than God. [Case for
