COMMENTARY PEARL

   Oma, would you help me set up a lemonade 
stand?" my nine-year-old granddaughter texted one 
summer afternoon. I was home alone savoring the 
solitude to finish a project. So I wrestled with my 
answer - for about two seconds. There's just 
something about a lemonade stand. 
   I knew Peyton was home alone with her 
older brother and sister who'd outgrown the lure 
of a lemonade stand. "I'll come right over," I 
texted back Soon, we'd made a huge sign, gathered 
supplies, and carried a small folding table down the 
driveway to set up shop in the shade on their 
neighborhood street. Two kinds of lemonade and some 
plastic cups. Nothin' fancy. Peyton set the price at 
a dollar a cup, with free refills. Inflation! 
I thought, remembering her mom's lemonade 
stands a generation ago. Peyton was here for the 
earnings; I was here for the memories. 
   Her first customer was a burly man in a 
construction truck. 
   "My kids used to have lemonade stands," 
he said, handing over a couple of dollar 
bills. 
   A biker zoomed by. "I'll be back!" he 
yelled, and soon reappeared. "Went home to get 
money. I can't pass up a lemonade stand." 
   The mail delivery vehicle stopped. "I 
love lemonade stands," the driver said, sipping 
her pink lemonade and telling us about her life 
as a mail carrier. 
   Others stopped - more workers, a teenager 
learning to drive, neighbors with their kids. 
   The last customer was a man on his way 
home from work "There's just something about a 
lemonade stand," he said wistfully as he handed 
Peyton a five-dollar bill. "Keep the change. And 
thanks." 
   Lord, You are the powerful Creator of the 
universe and tender Shepherd who gathers generations 
and neighbors together at a simple lemonade
