Luke 24:13-35 - On The Road To Emmaus.
Luke 24:27, 32 (NIV) And beginning with
Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them
what was said in all the Scriptures concerning
himself... They asked each other, "Were not our hearts
burning within us while he talked with us on the
road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
INTRODUCTION
How We Live " Studying Gods Word
Even though the men Jesus encountered on
the road to Emmaus had been with Jesus before
his death, they hadn't grasped the fact that his
death had been prophesied by the Old Testament and
by Jesus himself. So Jesus connected the dots
for them. He started from the writings of Moses
and then walked them through all of the
prophets, "explaining from all the Scriptures the
things concerning himself" (24:27). Now that would
have been quite a Bible study! Jesus opened their
minds to the meaning of all of the prophecies
regarding him. And finally, Jesus opened their eyes,
and they got it!
God's Word needs to be understood and
applied to life. You won't understand everything you
read, but the more you read, the more you'll learn
and the more you'll understand. From beginning
to end, the Bible is about Jesus. It tells what
happened to humanity, why we needed a Savior, and
what God did about it. It tells of God's great
love for us. It assures us of eternity. Ask God
to help you "get it" when you read his Word.

COMMENTARY PEARL
We'd finished our bike ride, and as we
loaded our bikes into our cars, my friend Laura
said, "Thanks, I feel like I just had therapy."
"Me too," I said, grateful for my weekly
ride with my friend.
Every time we bike, we have meaningful
talks. I've discovered I connect deeply with others
when I'm doing something physical. When I'm on a
walk, run, or bike ride, my senses are most alive,
and my heart becomes most open to sharing.
Raising three boys, my husband and I had our best
talks with our sons while throwing a ball back and
forth, hiking, or digging in the sand. I
intentionally took advantage of such times to ask them
deeper questions, and they were often more likely
to open up and share.
I've found I also connect deeply with
Jesus when I'm active. This shouldn't be
surprising as Jesus had meaningful moments with His
disciples and others while doing things. He was often
walking or fishing when He had incredible
conversations and shared insights about Himself to those
in His presence. Consider the two men on the
road to Emmaus. They were walking and talking
when Jesus joined them and continued on the path
with them. "He explained to them what was said in
all the Scriptures concerning himself" (Luke
24:27, NLV). And later they asked one another,
"Were not our hearts burning within us while he
talked with us on the road?" (Luke 24:32, NIV).
In quiet and contemplative times we can
sense Jesus speaking to us. But I've learned to
make it a habit to talk to Him as I walk, run, or
ride, and listen for Him in those motion-filled

COMMENTARY
The Shadow of a Doubt
Sunday mornings. I awake early, long
before the family stirs, the sunrise flickers, or
the paper plops on the driveway. Let the rest of
the world sleep in. I dont. Sundays my big
day, the day I stand before a congregation of
people who are willing to swap thirty minutes of
their time for some conviction and hope.
Most weeks I have ample to go around. But
occasionally I dont. (Does it bother you to know
this?) Sometimes in the dawn-tinted, pre-pulpit
hours, the seeming absurdity of what I believe hits
me. The fear that God isnt. The fear that
why? has no answer. The valley of the shadow of
doubt.
To one degree or another we all venture
into the valley. In the final pages of Lukes
gospel, the physician-turned-historian dedicated his
last chapter to answering one question: how does
Christ respond when we doubt him?
For both the dejected Emmaus bound
disciples (Luke 24:13-35) and the frightened upper
room disciples (Luke 24:36-49): A meal is served,
the Bible is taught, the disciples find courage,
and we find two practical answers to the
critical question, what would Christ have us do with
our doubts?
His answer? Touch my body and ponder my
story. We still can, you know. We can still touch
the body of Christ. Wed love to touch his
physical wounds and feel the flesh of the Nazarene.
Yet when we brush up against the church, we do
just that. The church is his body; it is made
full and complete by Christ, who fills all things
everywhere with himself (Eph. 1:23 NLT).
Christ distributes courage through
community; he dissipates doubts through fellowship. He
never deposits all knowledge in one person but
distributes pieces of the jigsaw puzzle to many. When
you interlock your understanding with mine, and
we share our discoveries When we mix,
mingle, confess, and pray, Christ speaks.
The adhesiveness of the disciples
instructs us. They stuck together. Even with ransacked
hopes, they clustered in conversant community. They
kept going over all these things that had
happened (Luke 24:14 MSG). Isnt this a picture of
the church - sharing notes, exchanging ideas,
mulling over possibilities, lifting spirits? And as
they did, Jesus showed up to teach them, proving
when two or three of you are together because of
me, you can be sure that Ill be there

CLOSING THOUGHT
In the Bible, bread is a symbol of the Word
of God. Jesus said, "It is written, Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4. As we
read, digest, and follow the Scriptures, we will
find strength, joy, peace, and everlasting life.
