Isaiah 9:6 - Gift of All Gifts; For Unto Us A Son Is Given.

Isaiah 9:6 (KJV) For unto us a child is
born, unto us a son is given: and the government
shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The
everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given, and the government will
be on his shoulders. And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 (NLT) For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us. The government will rest
on his shoulders. And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.

COMMENTARY PEARL

His Name Is Wonderful
When Ethan Hawke started out in Hollywood
as a young actor, one of his contemporaries was
River Phoenix. Hawke really looked up to him. But
tragically, Phoenix died of a drug overdose.
In an interview Hawke said, Drugs and
alcohol and depression are formidable opponents all
over the world. People think getting what you
want will make you happy, but a sense of self,
purpose, and love dont come from the outside. You
cant get distracted by this culture that
celebrates things that sometimes arent what they
seem.
If you look to this culture or this world
to find answers or fulfillment, you will come
up empty. But Jesus is sufficient to meet
whatever need you have in your life.
I love this description of Jesus in
Isaiah 9:6, which I think sums up what Christmas is
about: For unto us a Child is born, unto us a
Son is given; and the government will be upon
His shoulder. And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace (NKJV).
His name will be called Wonderful.
That takes care of the dullness of life. The word
wonderful comes from the root word wonder.
   Jesus is wonderful, amazing, astonishing,
bewildering, and beyond our human comprehension. Going
back to the root word wonder, the best way to
describe Him is awesome. We hear that word a
lot, which people use to describe all sorts of
things, from cars to tacos.
Yet its really a word that we should
reserve for God alone. Hes awe-inspiring. Hes
wonderful. And when you have a relationship with Him,
He will add meaning and purpose to your life.
Theres nothing this world offers that
will satisfy a person whos created to know
God. For all of us, His name can be Wonderful.

COMMENTARY

Our Prince of Peace
The Christmas rush is here. There are
plans to make, gifts to buy, and parties to
attend. Sometimes these activities leave us
exhausted and cranky - instead of peace and joy, we
may feel inner churning because theres too
much to do. Or perhaps this time of the year
brings nothing but sad memories and loneliness.
Unrealistic expectations and conflicts with loved ones
often leave us depressed and discouraged.
How can Jesus be our Prince of Peace when
our expectations and traditions fight against
the tranquility we desire? To understand why
Jesus was given this title, we must first
understand what it means. First of all, Gods Son did
not come to do away with all conflicts - not
yet, anyway. One day He will return to earth and
rule as King in an environment of external
harmony, but that was not the purpose of His first
coming. So while were on earth, well have
trouble (John 16:33).
When Christ left heaven to become a human
baby, His goal was to bring us peace with God by
reconciling us to the Father. His death on the cross
paid our sin debt in full, and our relationship
with God is restored. Now He offers us divine
peace - an inner serenity that fills our hearts
and minds no matter what is going on in our
circumstances.
Is your life characterized by a quiet
assurance that guards your heart and mind all day long
(Phil. 4:6-7), or have stressful circumstances left
you feeling depressed or agitated? Try setting
aside time each day to fix your eyes upon Jesus.
Then let Him heal your heart and calm your
spirit. [In Touch Daily Devotional by Charles
Stanley at www.intouch.org]

CLOSING THOUGHT

The first Christmas was not a gift to a
child; it was the gift of a Child. The story of
Jesus Christ coming into this world is not so much
the story of a birth as much as its the story
of a gift. For us, it was the entrance of Jesus
to Planet Earth. But for God the Father, it was
the departure of a Son from Heaven.
For unto us a Child is born, the
Scriptures say. Unto us a Son is given; and the
government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will
be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6
NKJV).
We sometimes think that when Jesus was
born into the human race in Bethlehem, He
essentially made His entrance into the universe. But
that isnt true at all.
Jesus is God. Therefore, He is eternal.
He has always existed. The Bible says, But
when the right time came, God sent his Son, born
of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to
buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law,
so that he could adopt us as his very own
children (Galatians 4:4"5 NLT).
His birth was His entrance into the world
as the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the
world.
The prophet Micah said, But you,
Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the
thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to
Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings
forth are from of old, from everlasting (Micah
5:2 NKJV).
The words from everlasting could be
translated from the vanishing point. Micah was
revealing by the Holy Spirit that the Messiah, God in
human form, would be born in a manger.
This is the great miracle of Christmas:
God became a man. [Greg Laurie from Harvest
