COMMENTARY PEARL

The Promise Prescription
Just as the doctor might prescribe a
medication for your body, God has given promises for
your heart. He shares them as gifts from friend
to friend. Make it your aim to get so
acquainted with these promises that you can write
yourself a prescription.
I'm feeling fearful today. Time for me to
open up a bottle of Judges 6:12: "The Lord is
with you." I will lay claim to the nearness of
God.
The world feels out of control. Time for
a dose of Romans 8:28: "All things work
together for good" (NKJV).
I see dark clouds on the horizon. What
was it Jesus told me? Oh, now I remember: "In
this world you will have trouble. But take heart!
I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).
Nothing lifts the weary soul like the
promises of God. [You Can Count On God by Max
Lucado]

INTRODUCTION

The LORD confides in those who fear
him. God offers intimate and lasting friendship
to those who revere him, who hold him in
highest honor. What relationship could ever compare
with having the Lord of all creation for a
friend? Your everlasting friendship with God will
grow as you revere him. [Life Application SB]

COMMENTARY

When my grandkids were smaller, I took
them to secret places. For instance, Id
tell them, Were going into this restaurant.
Do you want to go in the regular way like all
the other people, or do you want to go in the
secret way?
   The secret way, Poppa!
So Id take them in through a side
door, but they thought it was the secret way.
The Bible tells us that God revealed
secrets to Noah: By faith Noah, being divinely
warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly
fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his
household, by which he condemned the world and became
heir of the righteousness which is according to
faith (Hebrews 11:7 NKJV).
God spoke to Noah, and it activated his
faith.
There are a lot of ways that God speaks
to us, but the primary way He speaks is through
the word of God.
When you believe the Bible, you know
things that other people dont know. In fact, God
reveals things to Christians that non-Christians
dont understand.
Because they believe the Bible, average
Christians know more, in many ways, than some of the
great intellects of the world. For instance, the
Bible teaches that humanity is basically sinful.
Now, that makes sense, and the world makes more
sense when we accept the premise that were not
basically good.
The Bible also teaches that God is good.
It teaches that one day judgment will come to
the world and that its going to get worse
before it gets better. The Bible teaches that one
day Christ will return and will right every
wrong.
And the Bible says, The secret of the
Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show
them His covenant (Psalm 25:14 NKJV).

If you want to build a deep relationship
with God, you have to slow down and be quiet.
Friendship with God is like any other
friendship - you have to make time for it. If you
dont make time for your human friends, theyre
not your friends. You make time for your
friends. And if God is going to be your best friend,
youve got to give your best time to him.
The Bible says, Be still, and know
that I am God (Psalm 46:10 NIV).
You need to have a daily quiet time with
God. You have to be still so that you can know
him better.
Psalm 25:14 says, Friendship with God
is reserved for those who reverence him. With
them alone he shares the secrets of his
promises (TLB).
Many people dont know God. They
havent experienced Gods love. They dont know
why he does what he does. Yet, the Bible says
that friendship with God is reserved for those
who reverence him - in other words, those who
slow down and spend time with him.
What would a friendship be if you never
invested your time in it? Friendships need attention.
You will never know God intimately if all you do
is come to church services. Youve got to
read Gods Word and ask him, God, is there
anything you want to say to me? You dont have
to use any fancy phrases or words. Just talk to
him authentically. And then listen!
The Bible says it like this in Matthew
6:5-6: When you come before God, dont turn
that into a theatrical production Find a
quiet, secluded place so you wont be tempted to
role-play before God. Just be there as simply and
honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from
you to God, and you will begin to sense his
grace (Matthew 6:5-6 The Message).
Slow down today, focus on God, and listen
as he speaks to you about his grace. [Daily

CLOSING PEARL

Every day I have the honor of sitting down
with a book that contains the words of the One
who created me. Every day I have the opportunity
to let him give me a thought or two on how to
live. If I don't do what he says, he doesn't burn
the book or cancel my subscription. If I
disagree with what he says, lightning doesn't split
my swivel chair or an angel doesn't mark my
name off the holy list. If I don't understand
what he says, he doesn't call me a dummy. In
fact, he calls me "Son," and on a different page
explains what I don't understand. In the Eye of the
Storm by Max Lucado [Inspirational SB]

Though the Bible be crowded with golden
promises from board to board, yet will they be
inoperative until we turn them into prayer. F. B. Meyer
