Romans 8:1 - No Condemnation IF We Live In Christ.

Romans 8:1 (GNT) There is no condemnation
now for those who live in union with Christ
Jesus.

INTRODUCTION

In chapter 7 Paul asked, "Who will deliver
me from this body of death?" (7:24). Chapter 8
gives the answer: the Holy Spirit of God. The
blessings He brings make us "more than conquerors" (v.
37)! [Chapter by Chapter Bible Commentary by

COMMENTARY PEARL

A Hope-Filled Destination
Romans 8 is one of my favorite chapters
in the Bible, because it gives us the answer to
depression about the past, present, and future.
It tells us there is no condemnation for
our past, because verse 1 says, So now there
is no condemnation for those who belong to
Christ Jesus (NLT). When we sin (and we all
sin), the Devil will condemn us. And then we join
in that condemnation and condemn ourselves.
Yet what does the Bible say? First John
1:9 tells us, If we confess our sins, He is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness (NKJV).
So, if God tells us that He will forgive
us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness,
then we should accept that in our lives and
believe that He has forgiven us.
Romans 8 also tells us there is no
separation from God in the future. Paul wrote, And I
am convinced that nothing can ever separate us
from Gods love. Neither death nor life,
neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for
today nor our worries about tomorrow"not even
the powers of hell can separate us from Gods
love (verse 38 NLT).
Isnt that a great promise? God will
never stop loving us.
Lastly, Romans 8 assures us that all
things in the present are working together for our
good: And we know that God causes everything to
work together for the good of those who love God
and are called according to his purpose for
them (verse 28 NLT).
So as Christians, we can be assured there
is no condemnation for the past and no
separation from God in the future. And whatever were
going through God can ultimately work together for
good. Romans 8 is a hope-filled destination, and
its where we discover how to live this
Spirit-filled life. [Greg Laurie from Harvest Ministries;

COMMENTARY

Not guilty; let him go free - what
would those words mean to you if you were on death
row? The fact is that the whole human race is on
death row, justly condemned for repeatedly
breaking Gods holy law. Without Jesus we would
have no hope at all. But thank God! He has
declared us not guilty and has offered us
freedom from sin and power to do his will. [Life
Application SB]

In like manner you are a sinner. You cannot
atone for your past sins; you cannot change your
heart and make yourself holy. But God promises to
do all this for you through Christ. You believe
that promise. You confess your sins and give
yourself to God. You will to serve Him. Just as
surely as you do this, God will fulfill His word to
you. If you believe the promise, believe that you
are forgiven and cleansed, God supplies the
fact; you are made whole, just as Christ gave the
paralytic power to walk when the man believed that he
was healed. It is so if you believe it. Do not
wait to feel that you are made whole, but say, "I
believe it; it is so, not because I feel it, but
because God has promised."  {SC 51}

CLOSING THOUGHT

An End to Sins Control
Do you ever find yourself doing the very
thing you dont want to do or thinking the
thought you dont want to think? If so, youre
not alone. In chapter 7 of Romans, we find the
apostle Paul struggling with sin and how to overcome
it.
He wrote, I want to do what is good,
but I dont. I dont want to do what is
wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I
dont want to do, I am not really the one doing
wrong; it is sin living in me that does it
(verses 19"20 NLT).
   Interestingly, theres not a single
mention of the Holy Spirit in Romans 7. But in the
next chapter, we can find at least 20 references
to the Holy Spirit. So we see the apostle Paul
trying to do things in his own strength, but then
he realized there was help in the Holy Spirit.
There was power available to live the life that
God called him to live.
If you are a spiritual person, then you
will want to do spiritual things. For instance,
when a person is fit, theres most likely a
reason for that. It involves what they eat (and
dont eat), their exercise regimen, and other
things they routinely do.
Now lets apply this to our spiritual
lives. Paul wrote, God declared an end to
sins control over us by giving his Son as a
sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just
requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us,
who no longer follow our sinful nature but
instead follow the Spirit (Romans 8:3-4 NLT).
If you want to do better spiritually,
then you need the help of the Holy Spirit. And
the best way not to go backward is to go forward
in the Holy Spirit. [Greg Laurie from Harvest
