John 8:31, 32 - True Freedom is in A Relationship with Christ!
John 8:31, 32 (NLT) Jesus said to the people
who believed in him, You are truly my
disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And
you will know the truth, and the truth will set
you free.
INTRODUCTION
Truth sets us free. Knowing Jesus is knowing
real freedom.
Jesus himself is the truth that sets us
free (John 8:36). He is the source of truth, the
perfect standard of what is right. He frees us from
the consequences of sin, from self-deception,
and from deception by Satan. He shows us clearly
the way to eternal life with God. Thus Jesus
does not give us freedom to do what we want, but
to follow God. As we seek to serve God,
Jesus perfect truth frees us to be all that God
meant us to be. [Life Application SB]
Knowing Jesus is freedom from the power of
sin.
Sin has a way of enslaving us,
controlling us, dominating us, and dictating our
actions. Jesus can free you from this slavery that
keeps you from becoming the person God created you
to be. If sin is restraining, mastering, or
enslaving you, Jesus can break its power over your
life. [Life Application SB]
COMMENTARY PEARL
I Am The Truth
Many today say there is no such thing as
absolute truth. From philosophers to pop musicians,
the word goes out that "truth" is only what you
want it to be, and what is "true" for you isn't
necessarily "true" for anyone else.
But Jesus Christ is absolute truth.
Dozens of times He declared, "1 tell you the
truth." In one of His boldest and most
uncompromising statements He affirmed, "I am the way, the
truth, and the life" (John 14:6). The writer of the
Gospel of John stated, "Grace and truth came
through Jesus Christ" (John 1:1 7). James said that
God "chose to give us birth through the word of
truth" (James 1:18 NIV).
Do not be misled by the moral and
spiritual relativity of our age. God has revealed His
truth to us - in His written Word, the Bible, and
in the living Word, Jesus Christ. And because
Jesus is absolute truth, you can depend on Him
