2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV) And we all, with 
unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are 
being transformed into the same image from one 
degree of glory to another. For this comes from the 
Lord who is the Spirit. 

INTRODUCTION

Becoming Christlike is a progressive 
experience (see Romans 8:29; Galatians 4:19; Philip. 
3:21; 1 John 3:2). The more closely we follow 
Christ, the more we will be like him. [Life

COMMENTARY PEARL

Shining Up An Old Coin
   The New Testament describes a progressive 
work of God to shape us into his image. As we 
fellowship with God, read his Word, obey his commands, 
and seek to understand and reflect his 
character, something wonderful emerges. Or, better 
stated, Someone wonderful emerges. God comes out of 
us. We say things God would say. We do things 
God would do. We forgive, we share, and we love. 
It is as if God is scrubbing the smudge off an 
old coin. In time an image begins to appear. 
   This was Gods explanation through the 
apostle Paul: "You have taken off your old self with 
its practices and have put on the new self, 
which is being renewed in knowledge in the image 
of its Creator' (Colossians 3:9-10). 
   God's goal is simply this: to rub away 
anything that is not of him so the inborn image of 
God can be seen in us. When struggles come your 
way, could it be that God is shining up an old

COMMENTARY

   You can scrub a pig, sprinkle Chanel No. 
5 on him, put a ribbon around his neck, and 
take him into your living room. But when you turn 
him loose, he will jump into the first mud 
puddle he sees because his nature has never been 
changed. He is still a pig. 
   We constantly try to reform ourselves. 
Stores are filled with self-help books claiming to 
hold the secret to personal reformation. But such 
efforts are only temporary at best. A deeper 
transformation is needed - a transformation of the heart. 
   And it is possible! The Bible teaches 
that when we come to Christ, we are spiritually 
born again. God's Spirit comes to live within us 
and change us. Our motives change, our 
objectives change, our dispositions change, our eternal 
destiny changes. 
   No, it doesn't happen all at once. We 
will spend the rest of our lives learning what it 
means to follow Christ. But it begins now, as we 
open our hearts to Him. Is your life "being 
transformed  from glory to glory"?  
   In Christ, we dont have to be who we 
were yesterday. We dont have to cling to 
anger, bitterness, or regret. In Christ, we are not 
cleaned up versions of our old selves; we are made
