Colossians 1:11 - Waiting on the Lord or Just Waiting?

Colossians 1:11 (ESV) Being strengthened
with all power, according to his glorious might,
for all endurance and patience with joy.

COMMENTARY PEARL

"I'm sorry, Brooke, I know you were
counting on getting a cast, but it's too soon."
My daughter's face crumbled when she
heard the surgeon's words. Weeks before, she had
been hit by a drunk driver. Her ankle was
shattered, and all the ligaments were torn from her
tibia. She had endured two surgeries and was facing
another. With her leg encased in bandages, surrounded
by a Frankenstein-like cage of rods and pins,
she used a walker to get around.
"In six months," the doctor continued
cheerfully, "you'll be good as new."
When the doctor left, Brooke burst into
tears, and it was all I could do to keep from
joining her. Six months is an eternity to an active
twenty-six-year-old high school teacher and soccer coach. Brooke
would need strength, courage, and patience to
endure this trial. And I had to help her. Jesus,
guide me.
   Jesus, of all people, understood
suffering. Brooke's situation was nothing compared to
the agony He withstood. Still, I knew Jesus
cared about Brooke and all she was facing. I felt
Him whisper, I'll be there.
I took Brooke home with me, nestled her
in the cozy guest room, and fed her the food
she liked best. During the long days, I listened
to her worry about missing school - her
students falling behind, her team losing games, her
sick leave running out. I sympathized when she
cried about the unfairness of her situation, the
misery of being cooped up, and the loss of her new
car. And every night, I thanked Jesus for His
strength. Pat Butler Dyson

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

   Receive My glory-strength. When ongoing
problems require you to stick it out over the long
haul, beware of responding by grimly gritting your
teeth - just passing time in a gloomy frame of
mind. This passive, negative attitude is not the
way I want you to approach difficulties.
I am sovereign over the circumstances of
your life, so there are always opportunities to
be found in them. Don't be like the man who hid
his master's talent in the ground because he was
disgruntled with his circumstances. He gave up and took
the easy way out, blaming his hard situation
rather than making the most of his opportunity.
Actually, the more difficult your circumstance, the
more you can gain through it.
I gladly give you Glory-strength. It is
exceedingly potent because the Spirit Himself empowers
you - strengthening you in your inner being.
Moreover, My limitless Glory-strength enables you to
keep on enduring the unendurable. Since this
Power is so vast, there is more than enough of it
to spill over in to Joy! (Col. 1:11; Isa.
40:10; Mat. 25:25; Eph. 3:16) [Jesus Always by
