Galatians 6:2 (NLT) Share each others burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. COMMENTARY PEARL Share The Burden I heard once about a pastor who always ended his sermons with these words: "Remember: everyone you are going to meet this week is carrying a heavy burden." Over the years I have found this to be true; I have never met a person who wasn't weighed down by some kind of problem or burden. But God wants to help carry everyone's burdens - one way He does that is by sending someone into the person's life who can share the burden. Are there those in your church or neighborhood carrying a burden right now? Ask God to help you be a friend to them. Perhaps you can understand what they are going through, and you can help relieve the weight of their burden by your concern. Sometimes all they need is someone who will listen. Remember that God is "the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV). How can you help someone with a burden today? [Peace for Each Day by Billy Graham] COMMENTARY Bearing One Anothers Burdens If you are looking for a way to carry out Christs command to love your neighbor, Paul has a suggestion: bear their burdens. At some point, everyone struggles under the weight of an oppressive situation. Believers have an obligation to get under that load next to their brothers and sisters. Jesus sets the pattern for burden bearing. He calls to Himself all who are heavy-laden and gives them rest (Matt. 11:28-29). Since God predestines believers to be conformed to Christs likeness, we must imitate His care and concern for those who suffer. Acts 4:32 shows that the early church followed His example. To lift the load of poverty, they pooled their resources so that no one was in need. Pauls letters make clear his concern for the physical and spiritual welfare of growing churches. He fasted and prayed for them and sent missionaries when he could. He felt it was his responsibility to strengthen them, even though he sustained a personal hardship - his thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12:7). A believer cannot wait until his life is clear of obstacles before reaching out to others, since that day may never come. Even though we have our own needs, we can do all things through Christs strength - including sharing someone elses adversity (2 Cor. 12:9). When youre willing to wade into someone elses troubles to help that person hold up under the weight, two things happen. First, he or she receives desperately needed blessings in the form of aid, support, and love. And second, you fulfill Gods command to love a neighbor as yourself. [In Touch Daily Devotional by Charles Stanley at www.intouch.org] CLOSING PEARL You must be good before you can do good. You cannot exert an influence that will transform others until your own heart has been humbled and refined and made tender by the grace of Christ. When this change has been wrought in you, it will be as natural for you to live to bless others as it is for the rosebush to yield its fragrant bloom or the vine its purple clusters. If Christ is in you the hope of glory, you will have no disposition to watch others, to expose their errors. Instead of seeking to accuse and condemn, it will be your object to help, to bless, and to save.
