1 Thessalonians 5:6 - Be Alert and Clear Headed.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NLT) So be on your
guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and
be clearheaded.

COMMENTARY PEARL

On special occasions, my husband makes me
eggs Benedict for breakfast. It's an undertaking
of love - with a lot of steps and plenty of
cleanup afterward. Recognizing the special treat for
what it is, I stop whatever I'm doing so I can be
in the moment for that first bite. As it passes
my lips, I close my eyes to increase my sense
of taste. I savor every flavor and texture: the
crunchy English muffin, the juicy Canadian bacon,
the fluffy poached eggs, and the creamy
hollandaise sauce. It's like a symphony of flavors
perfectly blended together.
Once I've taken that first bite, however,
the magic begins to fade. It got me wondering
why.
After much thought, I determined the
fault lies with me. I only stop to focus on that
very first bite. Then I multitask throughout the
meal, eating while resuming whatever I was doing
or thinking about before. Yet in my
distraction, I still expect every bite to be just as
delicious. How can it be when my senses are no longer
heightened, and I'm no longer fully receptive?
Funny how eggs Benedict taught me why the
marvelous things in my life often lose their flavor:
my beautiful home, my wonderful family, my good
health. To savor my blessings, I must remain alert.
I can't grow gluttonous and sleepy with
expectation or live my days in a daze of activity.
Jesus is cooking up something wonderful.
I want to taste the deliciousness of every
moment. Claire Mcgarry
