COMMENTARY PEARL

Doctors circled the hospital bed where my
husband awaited a diagnosis. Initial testing was
complete. "Acute myeloid leukemia," the lead doctor
stated. Russ was admitted to the cancer center for a
month. We were crushed. We didn't want the cup we'd
been handed. Only three weeks prior, Russ had
retired from law enforcement and hung up his uniform
for the last time. Now he was weak and
defenseless in a flimsy hospital gown. Despite my best
efforts to encourage him, he felt utterly alone.
Sometimes I did too, even though I knew
my Savior watched with compassion. Utterly
alone, Jesus asked that His cup be taken from Him
in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:42).
   Interestingly, Gethsemane means "olive
press." Just as olives are pressed and crushed to
extract their oil, Jesus agonized under the crushing
weight of the sins He would bear to the point of
sweating blood. Though God did not take the cup from
Jesus, He did send an angel to strengthen His Son.
And Jesus sent an angel to Russ too. Joe
arrived, rolling a chemo IV pole identical to my
husband's down the hall. Joe loved Jesus, farming, and
basketball. The two men never ran out of things to talk
about, or laugh about, during their daily visits.
When we wish the cup would pass from us,
Jesus doesn't leave us to bear it alone. He may
send a person, like Joe, or a Bible verse at just
the right moment, or a new message in a worship
song we've sung before. No matter what cup we're
given, we never drink it alone. Karen Sargent
