Psalm 119:18 - PRAYER WITH GODS WORD LEADS TO A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM.

Psalm 119:18 (NIV) Open my eyes that I may
see wonderful things in your law.

Psalm 119:18 (TLB) Open my eyes to see
wonderful things in your Word.

INTRODUCTION

The often-used term law has the idea
of teaching, direction, or instruction. The law
is the gracious revelation of what God wants in
order for believers to have fellowship with him.
It reveals who he is. [New Bible Companion]

The Bible gives us wisdom. True wisdom goes
beyond amassing knowledge; it is applying knowledge
in a life-changing way. Intelligent or
experienced people are not necessarily wise. Wisdom
comes from allowing what God teaches to guide us.

COMMENTARY PEARL

The Bible should never be studied without
prayer. The Holy Spirit alone can cause us to feel
the importance of those things easy to be
understood, or prevent us from wresting truths difficult
of comprehension. It is the office of heavenly
angels to prepare the heart so to comprehend
Gods word that we shall be charmed with its
beauty, admonished by its warnings, or animated and
strengthened by its promises. We should make the
psalmists petition our own: Open Thou mine eyes,
that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy
law. Psalm 119:18. GC599-600

We cannot penetrate the deep things of God
with our natural perceptive powers. The
natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit
of God (1 Cor. 2:14). We need to pray that
the Lord will take the dimness away from our
soul, and that He will grant to us the Holy
Spirit, who alone can reveal the things of God to us
(1 Cor. 2:10). [SDA Bible Commentary]

Pray as you study, "Open Thou mine eyes,
that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy
law," Psalm 119:18. {CT 172.2}

COMMENTARY APPLICATION

The Bible is filled with countless
examples of people getting Gods vision, including
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Miriam, Esther, Daniel, Jonah,
Ruth, Micah, and Mary. Seeing Gods vision for
your life is a wonderful thing! God often uses a
mental picture to clarify the next step he wants
you to take.
I dont have to explain this to people
who are visual thinkers. Maybe thats you.
When you read a story in the Bible, you can see
it in 3D and vivid color. When you read a book,
you can picture the story in your mind.
But for the rest of us, its a little
harder. I am not a visual thinker. I tend to think
in words, not pictures.
So how do you get Gods vision if
youre not a visual thinker?
First, ask God a specific question.
In your quiet time, after youve read
the Bible and prayed, just be quiet and wait
before God. You could ask, God, is there
anything you want to say to me? And then you wait.
Then ask, God, is there anything I need to
know that Im not thinking about? And then
you wait.
James 1:5 says, If any of you need
wisdom, you should ask God, and it will be given to
you. God is generous and wont correct you for
asking (CEV). God wants you to ask him for advice,
and he wants you to be specific. Hes waiting
for you to ask!
Second, read Gods Word to discover
what God wants to say to you.
Psalm 119:18 is a great verse to
memorize: Open my eyes, so that I may see the
wonderful truths in your law (GNT). Its also a
perfect verse to pray as you open Gods Word.
Every answer to every problem you have is in that
book. But youve got to read it, study it,
memorize it, and meditate on it as you seek Gods
vision - for your life or even just for today.

CLOSING PEARL

The story is told of a prisoner locked
away in solitary confinement for thirty-three
years with a single book: the Bible. After he
died, the people who cleaned out his cell found
some interesting sentences etched on the wall:
Psalm 118:8 is the middle verse of
the Bible.
Ezra 7:21 contains all the letters of
the alphabet except the letter J.
The ninth verse of the eighth chapter
of Esther is the longest verse in
        the Bible.
No word or name in the Bible has more
than six syllables.
Clearly, this prisoner was captive to
more than a jail. He was constrained by blindness
to the relevance and the truth of God's Word.
He spent years, even decades, with the Bible
and came up with only odd bits of trivia.
Tragically, the timeless words of Scripture apparently
did not touch his heart.
Even the most brilliant scholars who
study Gods Word will remain unchanged by its truth
apart from the work of the Holy Spirit. God's Word
does not simply provide information. It draws us
to Him, and He gives us life. God Himself opens
our eyes to the truth of His Word and makes the
Scriptures come alive to us. DON'T SETTLE FOR
INFORMATION. STRIVE FOR TRANSFORMATION! [Being Still With
God Every Day by Henry Blackaby]
