John 16:7 (AMP) However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you]. INTRODUCTION Unless Jesus did what he came to do, we would have no Good News. If he did not die, he could not remove our sins; he could not rise again and defeat death. If he did not go back to the Father, the Holy Spirit would not come. Jesus' presence on earth was limited to one place at a time, but his leaving meant he could be present to the whole world through the Holy Spirit. [Life Application SB 2019] COMMENTARY PEARL Jesus In Me While Jesus is not physically with you, He has given you another, "the Advocate," who is with you forever - the Holy Spirit. And you can know that He is not just with you but is in you in a powerful way. A shift happens when you put your faith in Jesus, and you understand that life is not so much "Jesus and me" as it is "Jesus in me." As the Spirit fills us, we grow to know what it means to sense that He is near on sunny days and stormy nights. He is in you and with you at all times. The Counselor has come in the person of the Spirit and He intercedes for you on behalf of the will of God. Those words aren't a prescription for a magical happy pill. The truth in those words is what allows you to develop real faith, a raw faith, a faith where you acknowledge the Lord as the King of your life. Dear God, Your Spirit empowers me to live with real and confident faith today because He bears witness to Your unchanging character. Holy Spirit, guide me into truth today. [Grace and Glory by Louie Giglio] COMMENTARY The Helper Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with us always. The Holy Spirit is a person with all of the personality traits that any person has, and He deserves our attention. Jesus told His disciples they would be better off when He went away because He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them and in them. I am sure they thought, How could anyone be better than Jesus? Jesus had a flesh-and-blood body as we do, and He could only be in one place at a time, but the Holy Spirit can be everywhere, all the time, helping each of us simultaneously. Because the Holy Spirit is always with us, we are never alone and we need not fear. He not only helps us, but He comforts and strengthens us. The Lord offers us many blessings, and our part is to receive them by faith. Believe the Holy Spirit is with you right now and that He will never leave you. Ask for His help and strength throughout the day. Talk with Him and enjoy close fellowship with Him. Jesus, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit. I am thankful to know I am not alone and will always have the divine help that I need.
