Psalm 66:10-12 - Jesus Will Never Fail Us.TRANSLATIONS AND PARAPHRASESPsalm 66:10-12 (NKJV) For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us as silver is refined. 11 You brought us into the net; You laid affliction on our backs. 12 You have caused men to ride over our heads; We went through fire and through water; But You brought us out to rich fulfillment. NKJV Psalm 66:10-12 (NIV) For you, O God, tested us; you refined us like silver. 11 You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs. 12 You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance. Psalm 66:10-12 (NLT) You have tested us, O God; you have purified us like silver. 11 You captured us in your net and laid the burden of slavery on our backs. 12 Then you put a leader over us. We went through fire and flood, but you brought us to a place of great abundance. Psalm 66:10-12 (AMP) For You, O God, have proved us; You have tried us as silver is tried, refined, and purified. 11 You brought us into the net (the prison fortress, the dungeon); You laid a heavy burden upon our loins. 12 You caused men to ride over our heads [when we were prostrate]; we went through fire and through water, but You brought us out into a broad, moist place [to abundance and refreshment and the open air]. Psalm 66:10-12 (MSG) He trained us first, passed us like silver through refining fires, 11 Brought us into hardscrabble country, pushed us to our very limit, 12 Road-tested us inside and out, took us to hell and back; Finally he brought us to this well-watered place. INTRODUCTION Just as fire refines silver in the smelting process, trials refine our character. They bring us a new and deeper wisdom, helping us discern truth from falsehood and giving us the discipline to do what we know is right. Above all, these trials help us realize that life is a gift from God to be cherished, not a right to be taken for granted. [Life Application SB 2019] COMMENTARY PEARL We are prone to look to our fellow men for sympathy and uplifting, instead of looking to Jesus. In His mercy and faithfulness God often permits those in whom we place confidence to fail us, in order that we may learn the folly of trusting in man and making flesh our arm. Let us trust fully, humbly, unselfishly in God. He knows the sorrows that we feel to the depths of our being, but which we cannot express. When all things seem dark and unexplainable, remember the words of Christ, "What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter." John 13:7. MH 486-487 COMMENTARY Beauty From Pressure God is an artist. All of creation reveals His intentionality and beauty. Nature is His ongoing work of art - always in flux, developing and changing under His constant eye. We can see in different areas of His creation that part of His design involves using pressure and tension to bring beauty to the surface. A diamond is a great example of this. One of the most beautiful stones forms only under the right combination of extreme temperatures and incomprehensible pressure. Or consider the Grand Canyon, carved by the strain of the Colorado River coursing through its channels. When it comes to our lives, most of us would rather avoid periods of pressure and tension. We want beauty, but we don't always enjoy the process. But this is what His refinement often looks like. As you experience the pressures of life, look for opportunities to shift your understanding of what God is doing. Pray that God would refine your heart and deepen your trust. Dear God, help me to embrace times of testing and pressure, knowing that through them You are creating something beautiful in me for Your glory.
