Isaiah 9:2 - The Great and Glorious Light.Isaiah 9:2 (NLT) The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.Isaiah 9:2 (AMP) The people who walk in [spiritual] darkness Will see a great Light; Those who live in the dark land, The Light will shine on them. INTRODUCTION In a time of great darkness, God promised to send a light that would shine on everyone living in the shadow of death. This light was a person, who would be both "Wonderful Counselor" (all-loving) and "Mighty God" (all-powerful). This message of hope was fulfilled in the birth of Christ and the establishment of his eternal Kingdom. He came to deliver all people from their slavery to sin. The apostle John later referred to Jesus as the "true light" (John 1:9). Jesus referred to himself as "the light of the world" (John 8:12). [Life Application SB 2019] COMMENTARY PEARL Hope for and End to the Gloom. For centuries preceding Christ's first advent, darkness covered the earth, and gross darkness the people. Satan was throwing his hellish shadow athwart the pathway of men, that he might prevent them from gaining a knowledge of God and of the future world. Multitudes were sitting in the shadow of death. Their only hope was for this gloom to be lifted, that God might be revealed. PK 687-688 COMMENTARY The Great and Glorious Light God is the source of all joy, abundance, and goodness on this earth. His light can shine through any darkness and can fuel your faith. But if you've found yourself day after day walking under gray skies, it can be hard to believe that God's powerful light can still break through. What keeps your heart and mind in step with heaven is remembering that you are not off God's radar. You may not see Him, but He is still at work. There is evidence of His light in your life. You have received mercy even when you were far from God. He has chosen you. Your God is not a "bad news" God, and you do not have a "bad news" story. In fact, if you are in Christ, your story is guaranteed to end in redemption. If the darkness is masking your vision today and the clouds feel thick and immovable, you can rest assured that God's light is still shining through to offer you grace and peace. He is near, so your life can be forever marked by His great light. Dear God, shine through my shadows today and direct my gaze back toward Your throne of steadfast love.
