Isaiah 57:1 - Why Does God Allow Tragedy to Happen to Good People?

Isaiah 57:1 (NKJV) The righteous perishes, And no man takes it to heart; Merciful men are taken away, While no one considers That the righteous is taken away from evil.

Isaiah 57:1 (NLT) The righteous pass away; the godly often die before their time. And no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come.

PREFACE

The question of why God allows tragedy in the lives of good people is a complex one with no single answer, as interpretations vary across different beliefs and theological perspectives. Some theological viewpoints suggest that suffering can be a means for testing faith, personal growth, or a part of a larger, ultimately good, divine plan that may not be fully understood in the present. Other perspectives emphasize that tragedies occur within a world with free will and natural laws, which God has allowed, but from which He can still bring a greater good or use it to bring about redemption.

Testing and growth
Some beliefs hold that suffering is a test of faith, meant to reveal and strengthen one's commitment, and that overcoming it can lead to greater spiritual maturity.
Tragedy can also be seen as a way for individuals to develop compassion and be better equipped to help and comfort others who are suffering.

Free will and natural laws
One perspective suggests that God created a world with freedom, which includes the possibility of both good and evil. Forcing people to be good would negate free will, and the laws of nature, which allow for both good and bad events, are a necessary part of this system.
Under this view, God has "permissive will" to allow certain events to happen, but this does not mean He caused them or that they are part of His perfect will.

A greater good and redemption
Many traditions believe that God can bring a greater good out of even the most terrible events.
For example, though God did not will the death of Jesus, He allowed it because a greater good of redemption would result.
This perspective offers hope that even in tragedy, God can bring about healing and redemption.

Divine purpose and mystery
Ultimately, the specific reasons for an individual's suffering are not always revealed, and there are truths that belong to God alone.
This requires trust and faith, even when events are confusing or painful.
In this view, the full picture of why tragedies happen is part of a divine plan that will only be fully understood in the future. AI

COMMENTARY PEARL

Why Does God Allow Bad Things to Happen to Good People
Life falling in on you may be the harbinger just becoming something else. Best thing you can do is look up and say, God, are you trying to get my attention? This is the hour. Give him your attention. Don't put it off. God loves you and he can move sometimes in unpleasant ways in our own lives, but Romans 8:28 says what? That all things, even those unpleasant things, those harbingers, those disasters, those uncomfortable things, all things work together for good to those who are called according to his purpose and who love the Lord. And your good is not necessarily your health, wealth, prosperity, and happen as you know. Your ultimate good is to be conformed to the image of Jesus and so He'll take everything that happens in your life to mold you into a replica of His Son. by Anne Graham Lotz https://www.facebook.com/reel/3641181802680928

COMMENTARY

Isaiah takes comfort in the thought that in times such as those described in this chapter the death of the righteous delivers them from greater evils that would befall them were they to live on. [SDA Bible Commentary]

In general the Bible views death as an enemy, and sees long life as a blessing and gift from God. Yet death holds no terror for the believer. In fact, there are times when life itself is a greater burden. Here Isaiah observed that the premature death of a righteous man may well be a loving gift given by the LORD. What a powerful pair of verses to recall or to share when someone we know dies young. What assurance, here in the Old Testament, that upon dying those who walk uprightly "enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death." [The 365-Day Devotional Commentary]
