Psalm 121:3 - God Is Supreme and Sovereign Over Us and All Else.TRANSLATIONS AND PARAPHRASESPsalm 121:3 (NKJV) He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Psalm 121:3 (NIV) He will not let your foot slip - he who watches over you will not slumber; Psalm 121:3 (TLB) He will never let me stumble, slip, or fall. For he is always watching, never sleeping. WORD STUDY God is Supreme: That God is supreme means He has ultimate, unrivaled authority, power, and control over everything, existing as the highest being, creator, and ruler, with no one above or equal to Him, meaning all creation, including humanity, exists under His rule and purpose, and His will is sovereign over all events. It signifies His infinite nature, absolute knowledge, and final say in all matters, from cosmic events to individual lives. God is Sovereign: God's sovereignty means He has ultimate, supreme power, authority, and control over everything in the universe, including nature, history, and human lives; He is not limited, nothing happens by chance, and all things ultimately work according to His perfect, loving, and wise eternal purposes, even governing human free will and allowing suffering, all while working towards good for those who trust Him. INTRODUCTION This song expresses assurance and hope in God's eternal protection, day and night. He not only made the hills but all of heaven and earth as well. We should never trust a lesser power than God himself or believe that answers to life's deepest questions can be found in nature or this world's wisdom. Not only is God all-powerful, but he also watches over us. He watches us like a sentinel or shepherd, alert to danger and ready to help with our needs. Nothing diverts or deters him. We are safe. Let us welcome God's caring and untiring watch over our lives. [Life Application SB 2019] COMMENTARY PEARL One of the most intimately beautiful moments a parent or grandparent can experience early in the life of a child is when the baby awakens from sleeping, makes eye contact, recognizes the face, and smiles broadly. Oh, what a wonder! The child sees, recognizes, and is pleased. If not captured in a photo, it's certainly imprinted on the mind and heart. The Bible tells us our Lord is always watching, even while we sleep. Will His child wake screaming, eyes closed tight against the world and present circumstances? Will His child wrestle awake, squirming, unhappy, already calculating the day's workload, challenges, or miseries? Or will the child - will I - open my eyes, catch His gaze, and delight in recognizing the face of my Jesus, the One who loves me like no other? The phrase "watches over you" appears multiple times in eight short verses of Psalm 121. He's watching, watching, watching ... What will He see when I open my eyes on the new day? My attention darting everywhere else rather than locked on His face? My whole being churning, or will He see me smiling broadly because no matter what the day holds, I am held, cherished, prayed over, and watched over? This morning, may I make eye contact with the One whose gaze is already on me. Cynthia Ruchti Faith Step: If your habit is to look at the alarm clock, glance at your phone, or groan when you first awaken in the morning, build a new habit. Open your eyes slowly toward heaven, smile wide, and start the day with, "Good morning, Jesus." [Mornings With Jesus 2025 Devotional by Guideposts and Zondervan] COMMENTARY Christ will never abandon those for whom He has died. We may leave Him and be overwhelmed with temptation, but Christ can never turn from one for whom He has paid the ransom of His own life. Could our spiritual vision be quickened, we should see souls bowed under oppression and burdened with grief, pressed as a cart beneath sheaves, and ready to die in discouragement. We should see angels flying quickly to the aid of these tempted ones, forcing back the hosts of evil that encompass them, and placing their feet on the sure foundation. The battles waging between the two armies are as real as those fought by the armies of this world, and on the issue of the spiritual conflict eternal destinies depend. PK 176 TESTIMONY I have a testimony of an experience I had with a riptide on a California beach where I nearly lost my life. No person or lifeguard rescued me but an angel of God.
