2 Corinthians 4:17 - Look Beyond the Gloom to the Glory!

2 Corinthians 4:17 (NIV) For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

COMMENTARY PEARLS

These trials of life are God's workmen to remove the impurities, infirmities, and roughness from our characters, and fit us for the society of pure, heavenly angels in glory. But as we pass through these trials, as the fires of affliction kindle upon us, we must not keep the eye on the fire which is seen, but let the eye of faith fasten upon the things unseen, the eternal inheritance, the immortal life, the eternal weight of glory; and while we do this the fire will not consume us, but only remove the dross, and we shall come forth seven times purified, bearing the impress of the Divine. 1 T 705-7

Our minds take the level of the things on which our thoughts dwell, and if we think upon earthly things, we shall fail to take the impress of that which is heavenly. We would be greatly benefited by contemplating the mercy, goodness, and love of God; but we sustain great loss by dwelling upon those things which are earthly and temporal. We allow sorrow and care and perplexity to attract our minds to earth, and we magnify a molehill into a mountain....
Temporal things are not to engage our whole attention, or engross our minds until our thoughts are entirely of the earth and the earthly. We are to train, discipline, and educate the mind so that we may think in a heavenly channel, that we may dwell on things unseen and eternal, which will be discerned by spiritual vision. It is by seeing Him who is invisible that we may obtain strength of mind and vigor of spirit (ST Jan. 9, 1893).  6 BC 1099-1100

COMMENTARY

An Eternal Weight of Glory
None of us are immune to days that feel distracted, meaningless, or challenging. In unexpected hardship or long seasons of waiting, we ask ourselves, What good will come from this?
This is the battleground of the soul. This is where we must take heart! We know that God will use every moment of our lives for His glory and our good. The Bible is full of histories of hardship, stories of lost and confused people waiting on God to move and come through. And time and time again, He does.
God hasn't left you in your hardship. He's not doing nothing while you waste away. He's going to redeem all your pain in a powerful way for His name. Your suffering will not win the day. In the end, you're going to be standing by the power of a sovereign God who makes all things new.
Have confidence in the long arc of the story that God is writing. Nothing is meaningless. Even if your reward on earth seems small, your troubles are producing an eternal weight of glory that far outweighs everything else.
God, nothing is meaningless in my story. Give me endurance today to keep living for You and Your glory. [Grace and Glory by Louie Giglio]

CLOSING PEARL

In all ages Satan has persecuted the people of God. He has tortured them and put them to death, but in dying they became conquerors. They revealed in their steadfast faith a mightier One than Satan. Satan could torture and kill the body, but he could not touch the life that was hid with Christ in God. He could incarcerate in prison walls, but he could not bind the spirit. They could look beyond the gloom to the glory, MB 29-30

QUESTION

How does one make this Bible promise come alive in their live?

To make the promise of 2 Corinthians 4:17 ("light and momentary troubles" producing eternal glory) come alive, one must actively shift focus from immediate, visible, and temporal struggles to invisible, eternal, and spiritual realities. It involves trusting that suffering is not meaningless but is producing a "weight of glory" that outweighs the pain.
Here are practical steps to make this promise a reality in daily life:
o Shift Perspective on Suffering: View hardships not as purposeless pain, but as "light and momentary" compared to eternity. Recognize that these challenges work for you, not just against you, to develop character and prepare you for glory.
o Fix Eyes on the Unseen: Actively focus on eternal realities, such as the hope of Jesus Christ, rather than solely on current, temporary circumstances.
o Renew the Inner Person Daily: Even if the outer person (physical body or circumstances) seems to be falling apart, focus on the daily renewal of your inner spiritual self.
o Preach the Truth to Yourself: Counteract discouragement by speaking the promise of God's eternal perspective into your mind daily.
o Refuse to Give Up: Use this promise as a source of strength to endure, rather than losing heart.
This promise becomes real when it changes your thoughts and actions, allowing you to live with joy despite present adversity.  AI
