1 Peter 5:7 - Jesus, Our Special Friend in Sorrow and Suffering.

1 Peter 5:7 (NIV) Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7 (NLT) Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

INTRODUCTION

Carrying our worries, stresses, and daily struggles by ourselves shows that we have not trusted God fully with our lives. Humility is needed, however, to recognize that God cares, to admit our needs, and to let others in God's family help us. Sometimes we think that struggles caused by our own sin and foolishness are not God's concern. But when we turn to God in repentance, he will bear the weight even of those struggles. Letting God carry our anxieties calls for action, not passivity. Don't submit to circumstances; submit to the Lord, who controls circumstances. [Life Application SB 2019]

OVERVIEW AND WORD STUDY

Do you want to reduce your stress? Positive social ties can help. Healthy relationships are linked to lower blood pressure and stronger immune systems, and patients in committed relationships are three times more likely to survive heart surgery. On the other hand, the absence of supportive relationships can have the same effect as smoking 15 cigarettes a day!
Caring relationships matter. And as a Christian, you have the most caring connection of all: a bond with Jesus Christ. Today's Bible promise states that Jesus cares for you personally; you can "[cast] all your care upon Him."
Four words in this promise are precious:
"Cast" - like a fisherman casting a line far into a river, you throw your worries far away when you cast them onto Jesus.
"All" - Jesus is strong enough for your difficult problems, wise enough for the perplexing ones, and intimate enough for the inconsequential ones. Take all your problems to Him.
"Care" - the Greek word translated here indicates anxiety or concern. If it stresses you, bothers you, or worries you, you can take it to Jesus. Finally,
"Him" - remember who Jesus is and what He can do. He calmed a storm, healed a demon-possessed man, and resurrected the dead. The all-powerful God can carry any burden that weighs you down.
What an amazing promise and invitation! Throw your cares onto Jesus, naming each one in prayer. Then remind yourself, "These problems belong to Jesus now." He will take care of them because He cares for you.

COMMENTARY PEARLS

"Come unto Me," is His invitation. Whatever your anxieties and trials, spread out your case before the Lord. Your spirit will be braced for endurance. The way will be opened for you to disentangle yourself from embarrassment and difficulty. The weaker and more helpless you know yourself to be, the stronger will you become in His strength. The heavier your burdens, the more blessed the rest in casting them upon the Burden Bearer. The rest that Christ offers depends upon conditions, but these conditions are plainly specified. They are those with which all can comply. He tells us just how His rest is to be found.
"Take My yoke upon you," Jesus says. The yoke is an instrument of service. Cattle are yoked for labor, and the yoke is essential that they may labor effectually. By this illustration Christ teaches us that we are called to service as long as life shall last. We are to take upon us His yoke, that we may be co-workers with Him.
The yoke that binds to service is the law of God. The great law of love revealed in Eden, proclaimed upon Sinai, and in the new covenant written in the heart, is that which binds the human worker to the will of God. If we were left to follow our own inclinations, to go just where our will would lead us, we should fall into Satan's ranks and become possessors of his attributes. Therefore God confines us to His will, which is high, and noble, and elevating. He desires that we shall patiently and wisely take up the duties of service. The yoke of service Christ Himself has borne in humanity. He said, "I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy law is within My heart." Psalm 40:8. "I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me." John 6:38. Love for God, zeal for His glory, and love for fallen humanity, brought Jesus to earth to suffer and to die. This was the controlling power of His life. This principle He bids us adopt. DA 329-330

Through conflict the spiritual life is strengthened. Trials well borne will develop steadfastness of character and precious spiritual graces. The perfect fruit of faith, meekness, and love often matures best amid storm clouds and darkness. COL 61.1

COMMENTARY

Henri Nouwen confessed that when he met with Mother Teresa of Calcutta, he started explaining all his problems as soon as they sat down. For ten minutes, he tried to convince her how complicated they were.
When he was finally quiet, Mother Teresa said, "Well, when you spend one hour a day adoring your Lord and never do anything you know is wrong ... you will be fine."
Nouwen's response? "I realized, suddenly, that she had punctured my big balloon of complex self-complaints and pointed me far beyond myself to the place of real healing. I had raised a question from below and she had given an answer from above - from God's place and not the place of my complaints. Mother Teresa's answer was like a flash of lightning in my darkness."
Our setbacks, struggles, doubts, and insecurities can enmesh us in severe complications. We want solutions. We want practical answers. A simple answer "from above" often strikes us as irrelevant to the problem, as it did at first to Henri Nouwen. After all, he was an Ivy League professor and understood the complications of life. Yet many problems cannot be "solved," and other times the solution is in our seeing the maze of difficulties through God's eyes.
Nouwen advises, "Your life, my life, is given graciously by God. Our lives are not problems to be solved but journeys to be taken with Jesus as our friend and finest guide."
Lord Jesus, my need for you to guide me is greater than ever. My journey seems a thicket of troubles, with no pathway out. Please grant me your perspective and your confidence as you lead me today. Amen [The One Year Book of Encouragement by Harold Myra]

I received a letter from a radio listener who for five years had been crippled into a sitting position by arthritis. For five long, painful years she was unable to stretch out or to lie down, yet she wrote, "I have spent many a day alone, but never a lonely day." Why? It was Christ who made the difference. With Christ as your Savior and constant Companion, you, too, although alone, need never be lonely.
You today who are lying on a hospital bed enduring the loneliness of suffering can rest assured that Christ can give you His grace and strength. While you lie there, you can know something of the ministry of intercession, the greatest ministry on earth, as you pray for others.
Perhaps in suffering and sorrow, you want someone to come along with a strong hand to help wipe the tears away, put the smile back on your face, and give you joy. Jesus can do just that. God loves His children. If you are willing to trust Him and give yourself to Him, He can carry your sorrow.

AI COMMENTARY

Question: How does casting your anxiety upon Christ help with a long term anxiety situation?

Casting anxiety on Christ helps with long-term, chronic anxiety by providing a sustainable, daily exchange of heavy burdens for divine peace (1 Peter 5:7). It moves you from relying on self-management to trusting in God's sovereignty and care, allowing you to surrender control, reduce mental exhaustion, and find emotional relief.
Key ways this practice helps with long-term anxiety include:
o Active Surrender: The phrase "cast" implies a deliberate, ongoing action - throwing your worries onto Him rather than managing them yourself.
o Shifting Perspective: It transforms focus from "what if" scenarios to focusing on God's power, reducing the perceived size of problems.
o Combatting Chronic Worry: It requires breaking the cycle of rehashing problems by actively releasing them, often through prayer or journaling.
o Divine Support: It serves as a reminder that you are not alone, allowing you to rely on Christ's strength to endure prolonged, difficult situations.
   Actionable Steps:
o Daily Prayer: Actively turn fears into specific prayer requests with thanksgiving, rather than dwelling on them.
o Trust the Process: Do not "take back" the worries once given; trust that God is working, even if immediate solutions are not visible.
o Focus on God's Care: Remind yourself that God is personally invested in your well-being.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

How do we cast all care upon God? Try this simple prayer:
"Heavenly Father, you know what problems I face today. You know where I will meet discouragement, and where I may feel too weak to go on. You know that most of my anxiety is over worldly pursuits that won't matter when I am with you in eternity. Today I will trust you each hour for the strength, wisdom, and love to make this day worthwhile. In all my busyness today, let me feel all your joy. Amen." (Life Application Commentary)
