Proverbs 10:29 - There Is Strength And A Stronghold In Walking With God.

Proverbs 10:29 (NKJV) The way of the Lord is strength for the upright, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.

Proverbs 10:29 (AMP) The way of the Lord is strength and a stronghold to the upright, but it is destruction to the workers of iniquity.

INTRODUCTION

10:1-22:16 The discourses concerning wisdom and folly (chaps. 1-9) constitute a preface to the central portion of the book, which contains 375 of Solomon's proverbs. These proverbs are general principles and guidelines that may have exceptions. Any exception is not a problem of inerrancy, but a matter of the nature of proverbs. They are true as general rules. [Ryrie SB]

Here Solomon presents 375 of the over 3,000 proverbs he wrote (1 Kings 4:32). Proverbs are short sayings taken from everyday life that are intended to serve as practical guidelines for successful living. These proverbs are general principles that may have exceptions. They are not intended as personal promises or meant to apply in unusual or exceptional situations. This is not a problem with their inerrancy, but a matter of understanding the nature of proverbs and the contexts in which they do apply. [New Bible Companion]

This major collection of Solomon's proverbs stresses two ways of life or two value systems, wisdom (righteousness) and folly (sin). The comparisons normally come in parallel verses. [Disciple SB]

COMMENTARY

Proverbs 10:29 teaches that God's way provides security, strength, and refuge for those living with integrity (the upright), while simultaneously acting as a force of ruin and destruction for those who willfully engage in wickedness. It highlights that moral choices determine one's outcome under divine justice.
Key Aspects of the Counsel in Proverbs 10:29
o The Nature of "The Way of the LORD": This refers to God's righteous judgments, His moral laws, and His active providence in the world. It is not a neutral path but one that actively protects the righteous and opposes the wicked.
o A Refuge for the Upright: For those walking in integrity, God's path offers security, strength, and peace. It acts as a "stronghold" or "fortress," providing safety, especially during life's trials and uncertainties.
o Ruin for the Wicked: Conversely, the same divine justice that protects the righteous brings destruction, fear, and ultimate failure to those who persistently engage in evil, or "workers of iniquity".
o The Consequence of Choices: The verse emphasizes that one's lifestyle and daily choices lead to either blessing or destruction. It underscores that integrity is not just a moral ideal, but a secure foundation.
o A Call to Wisdom: The counsel urges a life of integrity, framing it as a choice for protection versus a path to destruction. AI

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Dear Child, I watch you laboring and fretting and anxiously striving to achieve things for me and my kingdom.  Hear me.  Your work is not my primary concern.  Your work is now, has always been, and always will be secondary to your relationship with me. What you do will flow out of your relationship with me as irrigation streams flow out of a deep, clear, powerful river.  The river (the relationship) will set your motives and supply your strength.  Then your work will flow forth to honor me.  Any time you allow your work to come ahead of your relationship with me, you risk working against me and my purposes. Draw near to me and rest.  Seek my will at every small turn.  Listen for my voice.  Be filled with my Spirit.  Then work with joy and abandon! The Source of your power, God [PostCards from Heaven by Claire Cloninger re Isa.40:31]

Remember that prayer is the source of your strength.  A worker cannot gain success while he hurries through his prayers and rushes away to look after something that he fears may be neglected or forgotten.  He gives only a few hurried thoughts to God; he does not take time to think, to pray, to wait upon the Lord for a renewal of physical and spiritual strength.  He soon becomes weary. He does not feel the uplifting, inspiring influence of God's Spirit.  He is not quickened by fresh life.  His jaded frame and tired brain are not soothed by personal contact with Christ.  7T243
