Jeremiah 32:17 - God-Dependent for Comfort Through Sorrow.

Jeremiah 32:17 (NKJV) 'Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.

OVERVIEW

Trust doesn't come easily. It wasn't easy for Jeremiah to publicly buy land already captured by the enemy. But he trusted God. It wasn't easy for David to believe that he would become king, even after he was anointed. But he trusted God (1 Samuel 16-31). It wasn't easy for Moses to believe that he and his people would escape Egypt, even after God had spoken to him from a burning bush. But he trusted God (Exodus 3:1-4:20). It isn't easy for us to believe that God can fulfill his "impossible" promises either, but we must trust him. God, who worked in the lives of the people we read about in the Bible, will work in our lives, too, if we will let him.
After Jeremiah bought the field, he began to wonder if such a move was wise. He sought relief in prayer from his nagging doubts. In this prayer, Jeremiah affirmed that God is the creator of heaven and earth, for whom nothing is too difficult; the wise judge, who is aware of all the ways of people; and our redeemer, who has great power. God loves us and sees our situations. Whenever we doubt God's wisdom or wonder if it is practical to obey him, we can review what we already know about him. Such thoughts and prayers will quiet our doubts and calm our fears. [Life Application SB 2019]

INTRODUCTION

A Distressed Prophet Goes to God.
So discouraging was the outlook for Judah at the time of this extraordinary transaction that immediately after perfecting the details of the purchase and arranging for the preservation of the written records, the faith of Jeremiah, unshaken though it had been, was now sorely tried. Had he, in his endeavor to encourage Judah, acted presumptuously? In his desire to establish confidence in the promises of God's word, had he given ground for false hope? Those who had entered into covenant relationship with God had long since scorned the provisions made in their behalf. Could the promises to the chosen nation ever meet with complete fulfillment?
Perplexed in spirit, bowed down with sorrow over the sufferings of those who had refused to repent of their sins, the prophet appealed to God for further enlightenment concerning the divine purpose for mankind. PK 470-471

COMMENTARY PEARL

Comfort Through Sorrow
No matter who you are or where you come from, you've likely suffered some form of loss. If you are in that tension right now, you may feel like you're on the brink of collapse, or like the loss you've experienced is too heavy to keep going. Know today that you're not alone in these feelings. If you are in relationship with God, He is able to heal and restore every wound and worry.
When we say God is able, that's not a little Christian slogan to throw around. It is reality, and we have proof of His power all around us. We just have to look up and see His creation - the entire cosmos - to know that God is all-powerful. The God who made the galaxies knows exactly what you are walking through, and He is actively and compassionately working in your life.
Our God is a God of order, and He still has a plan for you. Nothing is too hard for Him. Loss doesn't get the final word - the God of all creation does. This is who journeys with you today.
God, comfort me today with the fact that nothing is too hard for You and that You are able to bring good from hardship. [Grace and Glory by Louie Giglio]

COMMENTARY

God-Dependent
God spoke all things into being, and he sustains all things - every cell, every star, every thought. We cannot think up anything that would be impossible for him to do. His name the LORD in Hebrew means he is. It's related to his name for himself: I AM. He exists by his own power; everything else exists by dependence on him. I AM also implies I am actively present. He's not far away in a distant heaven; he's right here, as close as your breath. This is the God you are trusting to get you to the finish line. He sustains galaxies, and he can certainly sustain you. What do you need from our all-powerful God?
As we meditate on the power it takes to hold all the stars in the universe in place and keep the earth spinning at the right speed, we have some glimpse of the awesome power God has to work in our lives. [The Daniel Plan 365-Day Devotional]
