TRANSLATIONS

John 15:5 (ESV) I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:5 (NLT) "Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:5 (AMP) I am the Vine; you are the branches.  Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit.  However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus says that to live a truly good life we must stay connected to him, like a branch attached to its vine. In the same way that plants receive nutrients from their roots, we receive life-giving water from the Holy Spirit and food from God's Word. These provide spiritually regenerative power. Apart from Jesus, we lose this connection and our efforts are unfruitful. Are you receiving and thriving from the nourishment offered by Jesus, the Vine? Remaining in Christ requires us to be fully connected to Jesus moment by moment. [Life Application SB 2019 mod]

COMMENTARY PEARL

Staying Connected to The True Vine
You can counter anxiety by abiding in Christ. But what does that mean? It means that you remain with Jesus. Dwell with Him. That you stay in a constant posture of surrender and dependency. Not in your own strength and your own power, but in His.
How beautiful are the words of Jesus in John 15:5? We see right off the bat what our role is in this whole story. We are the branches. Jesus is the Vine. He's the fount of life. Of nutrients - of richness and vitality. He is our Source. We are the receivers.
As branches, our job is to remain. We are to stay connected to the Vine; and when we do, we bear much fruit.
What kind of fruit do you bear when you are connected to Jesus? Paul talked about it in Galatians: "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (5:22-23). That is what is possible for you today when you abide.
Dear God, as I remain in You, bear much fruit in me that glorifies Your name and brings good into my life. [Grace and Glory by Louie Giglio]

CLOSING PEARL

Abiding in Christ means a constant receiving of His Spirit, a life of unreserved surrender to His service. The channel of communication must be open continually between man and his God. As the vine branch constantly draws the sap from the living vine, so are we to cling to Jesus, and receive from Him by faith the strength and perfection of His own character. DA 676
