James 1:17 - Every Good and Perfect Gift Comes from God.James 1:17 (NIV) Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.James 1:17 (NLT) Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. INTRODUCTION The Bible often compares goodness with light and evil with shadow and darkness. God is the sovereign creator of the sun, moon, and stars. He gives us good gifts and illuminates our minds to see the goodness in these gifts. As his prized possessions, we are the ones to receive a foretaste of future blessings (see Romans 8:22-23). (For other passages associating God with light, see Psalm 27:1; Isaiah 60:19-22; John 1:1-14.) [Life Application SB 2019] COMMENTARY PEARL The heart of God yearns over His earthly children with a love stronger than death. In giving up His Son, He has poured out to us all heaven in one gift. The Saviour's life and death and intercession, the ministry of angels, the pleading of the Spirit, the Father working above and through all, the unceasing interest of heavenly beings, - all are enlisted in behalf of man's redemption. SC 21 COMMENTARY Greatest Gift Ever Given Have you ever considered the tremendous benefits that exist for us on this side of Eden? Yes, we're living in a fallen, sin-stained, corrupted world. We're far from paradise. But we're also living with the knowledge of how far God Almighty will go for us. If you're not careful, you can begin to look at the cross as ordinary and commonplace - as just another part of the story - when in reality, the cross is the story. It's everything. For a long time, people who followed God had to look forward with faith that God would right every wrong and win the ultimate battle against sin. But for you, it's not theoretical or hopeful thinking. It has happened. Jesus died and rose again. The cross is proof of God's love for you. The cross was the final sacrifice. It was the good and perfect gift, the ending hammer blow to sin and death. It is the invitation through which you find intimacy with God and the full requirement of your wage of sin. Think again about the cross today, and let its power fuel you to worship and glorify Jesus. Dear Lord, You have given everything so that I may walk with You. I exalt You today and glorify Your name. [Grace and Glory by Louie Giglio] CLOSING THOUGHT In vain are men's dreams of progress, in vain all efforts for the uplifting of humanity, if they neglect the one Source of hope and help for the fallen race. "Every good gift and every perfect gift" (James 1:17) is from God. There is no true excellence of character apart from Him. And the only way to God is Christ. He says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me." John 14:6.
